If you're like me then you make playlists like it's a hobby. You have one for everything even for when you're feeling down. There's something comforting about listening to miserable music when you're upset. Here's a list of 10 of my favourite songs by women that you should have on your sad playlist.

1) Heavy - Orla Gartland

Featured on Orla Gartland's most recent EP Freckle Season perfectly depicts the sorrow of a break-up. The melody heavily relies on soft notes of a piano, invoking grief and loneliness from the very beginning.

Saddest Lyric: Guess I needed a minute, to live a life without you in it. But you're in every stripey t-shirt that I own

2) Too Sad To Cry - Sasha Sloan

Sasha Sloan has a lot of sad songs, every single one could easily be added to your playlist. However, this one, in particular, is most heartbreaking. In Too Sad To Cry Sloan expresses the difficulties of the crushing weight that comes with being unhappy for a long time.

Saddest Lyric: Lied to my doctor, she knew I was fakin'. Gave me some pills, but I'm too scared to take 'em. I try and I try, but I'm too sad to cry

3) Lonely - Violet Skies

Violet Skies is one of my absolute favourite female musicians. The welsh singer has a stunning voice which is beautifully showcased in Lonely. The song sounds like it would fit perfectly after a break-up scene in a movie.

Saddest Lyric: Scratch my heart straight out of my chest. Burn my house down, it still hurts less

4) Parallel Universe - Clara Benin

In the song, Clara Benin wonders if her relationship would work out in a parallel universe. The Filipino singer-songwriter has an enchantingly laidback style which creates the illusion of a sad hazy dream.

Saddest Lyric: In a parallel universe, maybe you'd be my first, I could be your only one

5) July - Noah Cyrus

Noah Cyrus has said July is very emotional and heartfelt for her. She also noted that when she wrote the song, she felt she was never good enough for a certain person. Like all music by the Cyruses, July has a country undertone which makes it stand out from your regular sad song.

Saddest Lyric: 'Cause  you remind me every day I'm not enough, but I still stay

6) Like Everybody Else (Acoustic) - Lennon Stella

Like Everybody Else focuses on human insecurities. Lennon Stella sings about not feeling special enough and the lyrics seem like she has let us read her diary. Despite this personal level, the song is one anyone could relate to.

Saddest Lyric: Don’t even go near a mirror, it’ll kill ya. Trust me you don’t wanna see yourself

7) Everything I Wanted - Billie Eilish

Probably the most basic song on this list but it really is perfect for a sad playlist. Billie Eilish has a talent for producing very emotionally raw music — Everything I Wanted is no exception. Eilish sings about her struggle with depression and suicidal thoughts, making the song heart-wrenching.

8) Silhouette - Grace Carter

Silhouette is about jealousy and realising you're not as important to somebody as they are to you. Grace Carter's beautifully controlled voice is absolutely gorgeous to listen to. Every song on Carter's Why Her Not Me EP is deeply emotional but Silhouette is my favourite

Saddest Lyric: There's a fire in your eyes when you're holding a cigarette but you won't hold me

9) Everybody Loves You - Charlotte Lawrence

The nature of Everybody Loves You is chillingly personal. Charlotte Lawrence shares her experience of sexual assault with her listeners. The lyrics are raw and upsetting but could be comforting for those with experiences of their own, knowing they're not completely alone.

Saddest Lyric: It's my body and it hates you, why does everybody love you?

10) Liability - Lorde

No sad playlist is complete without Lorde. Liability is stripped back allowing you to really hear the agony in Lorde's voice. The song is a sort of apologetic response to all those who "made the big mistake of dancing in my storm." The self-awareness in her lyrics tugs on your heartstrings.

Saddest Lyric: The truth is I am a toy that people enjoy 'til all of the tricks don't work anymore and then they are bored of me
