Why You Should Be Listening to... Billy Lockett

Northampton independent artist Billy Lockett has gone from The Late Late Show with James Corden to releasing his emotionally charged new EP 'Reflections'.

After parting ways with his label, the singer-songwriter wastes no time over lockdown as he delves into the events of the past year and brings them together into a six-track EP that brings vulnerability yet growth to life. Speaking about his latest project, Billy adds: “During this pandemic, I've been learning to forgive myself and study the reasons why I messed up so many times before with drugs, record labels and relationships. Every song is a different chapter of the past. Life is beautiful, totally worth living and should never be taken, for granted, especially in the times we're living in right now.”

Through the candid approach of delicate piano chords with the soaring yet dulcet vocal tones, 'Reflection' is the account of Billy's past mistakes whilst also realising what's important in life. Opening his account with the heart-wrenching 'Wasting Time' that's followed through with 'Don't Mean A Thing', the artist distinctive, honest lyricism takes centre stage.

With the calm introspection of his past life, the EP's approach is simple but effective and one that pulls on our heart. Keeping to the orchestral soundscapes he is known for alongside the commanding vocals, 'Talk' featuring Welsh singer Violet Skies is the clear standout as their intimate harmonies intertwine with each other on the flow of the cinematic chorus.

At the same time, Billy brings a new flare to his production with the finishing touches of his latest project. Through the thunderous bass with the pulsating dance beat, 'Silence' is the closest Billy's getting to a pop song. While maintaining the theme of amenability, his finale is a memorable end to a fine EP.

As he takes on the world by storm, Billy’s freedom from the constraints of the pressured industry gives him control of his destiny and one that many critics are keeping their eyes on.
