Let’s throwback to the start of this project, a completely different idea to what I've got now and an idea I hope to expand in the future. But for now, Coming Out onto the Field came alive as I delved further into the topic.
In the latter stages of the multimedia project, my initial idea was the gender divide in the music industry and challenging high industry pledges to the promise of a 50/50 balance. Taking into consideration of Covid-19 and how the music industry is running, I wanted to understand these pledges but question why nothing was happening.
As I took up research and gathered up interviews, I pitched my original idea to my supervisors, in which I gained feedback on how I could undertake this project. However, as the days went by of further reading and speaking to relevant people, I felt stuck in how I could expand. As someone who runs their own music site, I am all for gender equality and 50/50 balance, but after speaking to my supervisor, I thought it was best to remove myself from the music world and delve into my latest project of football players coming out.
At first, I looked at why don't football players feel safe to come out in English Football but, after a series of interviews I quickly realised that it wasn't just one reason but a whole host of topics. Taking away insightful interviews and up-to-date research, I decided to come up with Coming Out onto the Field - an investigation into the complexities of football players coming out.
With a series of interviews under my belt and week after week of supervisor meetings, I felt confident in what I was producing. Saying that there's still a lot to do but, I am looking forward to sharing the final touches.
